How It Happens

Nearly all the material I use for my artworks is collected while I’m out walking, mostly in New York’s Central Park. When I started this practice, I picked up all the trash I saw along the way, but now that’s no longer possible. I bring this detritus back to my studio and wash or rinse it but rarely scrub it because I like the marks made on things by the dirt and snow, or being run over by trucks. I sort it by color and store it in bins.

My sculptures start when some piece I’ve found looks to me like a part of some plant or animal that might live in the park.

I try to work only with what’s “given”, only using more traditional art supplies that I already own, and not buying anything more, except wire.
